CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at the Market Place Mall over the weekend, the Champaign Police Department confirmed Tuesday.

Authorities said the teenager was initially taken into custody in Urbana for aggravated battery with a firearm. After the victim succumbed to injuries sustained in the Saturday incident, the case was referred to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office for additional homicide-related charges.

Because of the suspect’s age, state law prohibits the release of identifying information. Police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing as they work to determine whether others were involved in the altercation that led to the shooting.

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone who witnessed the fight or captured it on cell phone video to contact the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 217-373-8477.
