URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — On Wednesday, Carle Foundation Hospital celebrated the retirement of James Shepherd, MD, who has been an OB-GYN physician at the hospital for more than 33 years.

For over three decades, Shepherd has delivered thousands of babies in the community. As his final shift ended, the team at Carle gathered for a “clap out” walk, featuring a red carpet, confetti poppers, and renaming the maternity ward after him for the day.

“After more than 33 years and over 6,000 babies, I am filled with gratitude for the families who invited me into some of the most joyful and vulnerable moments of their lives,” said Dr. Shepherd. “Carle Health has been my professional home, and I am thankful for the colleagues, nurses and team members who made this work so meaningful. To the next generation of physicians and caregivers: stay curious, dream big and never lose sight of the impact you can have on the lives in front of you.”

Carle Health is grateful for Dr. Shepherd’s dedication and wish him the best in his retirement.
