URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — The Champaign County Judiciary is inviting students across the county to participate in Law Day activities designed to promote understanding of the legal system and the rule of law.
Law Day, observed annually on May 1, celebrates the role of law in protecting freedoms and ensuring justice. The American Bar Association has selected “The Rule of Law and the American Dream” as the 2026 theme.
In a letter sent to Champaign County school principals, Chief Judge Randall B. Rosenbaum said the rule of law — the principle that no person is above the law — ensures people can live freely and pursue their dreams.
To engage local youth, the judiciary is sponsoring several activities open to students enrolled in public schools, private schools and those who are homeschooled.
Students will be invited to the Champaign County Courthouse on May 1 to observe a mock trial, tour the courthouse, visit the Lincoln exhibit and meet judges and court personnel.
In addition, two contests are being held:
Middle and high school students may enter an essay contest on the Law Day theme, reflecting on what it means and how it impacts them. Essays must be typed, no more than 500 words and submitted by March 31. The use of artificial intelligence is not permitted. First-place winners will receive $100, and second-place winners will receive $50.
Grade school students may participate in a poster contest centered on the same theme. Posters must be no larger than 2 feet by 3 feet. Teachers must notify the judiciary by March 31 to arrange submission pickup. First and second-place prizes are $100 and $50, respectively.
