Champaign man accused in fatal Columbia Avenue shooting denied pretrial release

CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A 21-year-old man accused of killing Aaron Sibley on Columbia Avenue last week will remain in custody pending trial.

Charles Haynes appeared in Champaign County court Tuesday for a detention hearing. Judge Brett Olmstead ruled there is clear and convincing evidence that Haynes fatally shot Sibley and that he poses a threat to the community that cannot be mitigated by any conditions of release.

Sibley, 33, was found with a gunshot wound in an alley Friday and was pronounced dead at Carle Hospital shortly after police arrived. Haynes faces four counts of first-degree murder and is currently detained in the Champaign County Jail. A status hearing is scheduled for May 20.

Investigators continue to examine the case and are seeking assistance from the public. Anyone with information or surveillance footage is encouraged to contact the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545 or submit anonymous tips to Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477.
