CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen is speaking out against hate and violence following what she described as a “tragic, violent act of hate” at the Islamic Center of San Diego earlier this week.

In a public letter dated May 20, Feinen said no one should fear for their safety in a place of worship or learning. She addressed the message to community members and specifically voiced support for Champaign’s Muslim residents.

“I want to assure our Muslim community members that you are always welcome in Champaign, and we stand with you in opposition to hate, intolerance, and violence,” Feinen wrote. “Racism, in all its forms, is entirely unacceptable and must be rejected.”

The mayor also said she was grateful for the many cultures represented in Champaign and said diversity helps make the community vibrant and strong.

Feinen encouraged residents seeking resources or wanting to report discrimination to contact the city’s Equity and Engagement Department through the City of Champaign website.
