CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The City of Champaign is implementing temporary alcohol restrictions in anticipation of large crowds celebrating the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team’s run to the NCAA Final Four.

City officials announced emergency orders that will take effect Saturday, April 4, in a defined area around campus. The measures are designed to promote public safety during expected post-game celebrations.

Under the order, businesses in the affected area will be required to serve alcoholic beverages in plastic, paper, or aluminum containers, prohibiting the use of glass. The city will also restrict the sale of packaged liquor and cocktails-to-go, as well as limit alcohol deliveries into and out of the designated zone during and after the game.

Officials say the restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of injuries and property damage, particularly from broken glass in crowded environments.

If the Illini win their semifinal matchup, similar restrictions will be implemented on Monday, April 6.

City leaders praised students, residents, and visitors for celebrating responsibly following the team’s Elite Eight victory and expressed hope for similar behavior during the Final Four. Law enforcement will maintain an increased presence in the Campustown area to monitor activity and ensure public safety.

“We understand these restrictions may be an inconvenience, but they are being taken to help ensure a safe environment for everyone,” said Deputy Liquor Commissioner Jeff Hamilton in a statement. “We’re excited to support the Illini and encourage fans to celebrate responsibly.”

The city is urging fans to remain mindful of safety guidelines as excitement builds around the team’s pursuit of a national championship.
