URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) – Families looking for a festive and educational way to welcome the fall season are invited to attend the fourth annual Crop Sciences Harvest Open House on Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center, 4202 S. 1st Street, Champaign.

Hosted by the Department of Crop Sciences and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, this free event brings agriculture to life through interactive exhibits, hands-on science activities, games, prizes, and family-friendly fall fun.

Guests can expect everything from popcorn genomics (with snacks!) to pumpkin painting, corn shelling, flower-pot crafts, and even a corn dig for prizes. Kids and adults alike will enjoy seeing farm equipment up close, learning how biological control helps manage pests, and exploring how wheat becomes pasta.

“Harvest Open House brings the excitement of the harvest season together with hands-on learning activities in one location,” said Andrea Faber Taylor, professor in crop sciences. “Plus, nothing gives more ‘feelings of fall’ than being immersed in a farm setting with pumpkins, corn, and other crops harvested right in front of you!”

Attendees will also discover how modern agriculture is more than tractors and fields—it’s cutting-edge science. Displays and demonstrations will showcase how today’s researchers are using big data, climate-resilient crop breeding, and smart pest control tools to tackle global challenges in food and fuel security.

“This event is a great opportunity to spend a fall day outdoors learning and playing with your family and friends in a living classroom,” added Adam Davis, department head of Crop Sciences. “We look forward to welcoming the community this weekend.”

Admission is free, and local favorites La Paloma and the Moo Mobile from Sidney Dairy Barn will have food and treats available for purchase.
