SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — Illinois Department of Employment Security officials say the state added thousands of jobs in January, even as the unemployment rate saw a slight increase.

According to new data, Illinois’ unemployment rate rose to 4.9 percent in January, up from 4.7 percent in December and slightly higher than the same time last year. Despite the increase, total nonfarm payroll jobs grew by 18,000 over the month, marking the largest gain since mid-2023.

The strongest job growth was seen in construction, which added 13,500 positions, followed by manufacturing with 8,400 new jobs. Trade, transportation, and utilities also posted gains.

However, some sectors experienced declines, including private education and health services, financial activities, and other services.

Compared to a year ago, total nonfarm employment in Illinois increased by 7,900 jobs. Gains in education, health services, and construction were partially offset by losses in professional and business services, as well as trade and hospitality sectors.

State leaders say the mixed report reflects both economic strength and ongoing uncertainty. Officials noted that while job growth remains steady, broader economic factors continue to impact hiring decisions.

In total, about 318,700 people were unemployed in January, a slight increase from the previous month.
