SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — Illinois youth turkey hunters set a new harvest record during the 2026 season, continuing a multi-year trend of growing participation and success.
According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, young hunters harvested a preliminary total of 2,318 birds, surpassing last year’s record of 2,099. This marks the third consecutive year of record-setting harvest totals.
Participation also reached an all-time high, with 7,369 youth permits sold in 2026, compared to 6,538 the previous year. Officials say the continued growth reflects strong interest in youth hunting programs and a healthy statewide turkey population. State officials say a success rate above 30 percent for the third straight year highlights both favorable conditions and effective wildlife management efforts.
The youth season took place over two weekends, March 28–29 and April 4–5. The top counties for harvest included Jefferson, Fayette, Marion, Adams and Clay.
